As a major actor in the development of the tourism industry in French Polynesia and conscious about the challenges linked to its operations (climate-energy, competition, new policies, etc.), Air Tahiti Nui is voluntarily engaged in a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative since 2015.
Our mission: To ensure sustainable air service that accompanies the development of the tourism industry of French Polynesia, while maintaining profitability and the high safety standards of our operations.

Air Tahiti Nui was one of the first Polynesian companies to voluntarily commit to a CSR approach.
Following the publication of the two sustainable development reports for 2016 and 2018 which contributed to promoting and popularizing a CSR approach to its stakeholders (employees, businesses, etc.), the company has continued to communicate its CSR efforts in a consolidated annual report since 2019
After the publication of two sustainability reports (2016-2018), the company continues to report on its CSR efforts in the integrated annual report since 2019, alongside its business results, financial data and non-financial performance (with no change in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative recommendations).
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Conscious that French Polynesia is vulnerable to climate change because of its location in the Pacific, Air Tahiti Nui published its first greenhouse gas emission assessment (BEGES), thanks to the support of ADEME Polynesia, to measure and to reduce the impact of its activity on the environment.
This audit has allowed to :
- Evaluate and assess the GHG emissions factors
- And implement a reduction policy over a period of 3 years based on 4 focus areas
- Carbon efficiency of flights
- Internal environmental initiative
- Passenger awareness
- Carbon offsetting (medium term)
Summary of the results of the carbon assessment
95% of CO2 emissions are linked to the combustion of fuel on Air Tahiti Nui flights representing 440 000 tonnes of CO2 eq. over the year 2014; the highest expense item for an airline, Air Tahiti Nui operating mainly on long haul flights. This assessment allowed to identifying secondary emissions items linked to the on-board catering service, the passengers and employees flying with Air Tahiti Nui.
> Optimizing the carbon efficiency of our flights
Since the end of 2019, Air Tahiti Nui has operated an exclusive fleet of four Boeing B787-9 “Tahitian Dreamliners”. These new generation twin-engine aircraft enable significant reductions in bith noise pollution (below 85 decibels during take-off and landing) and greenhouse gas emissions.
At the same time, Air Tahiti Nui has continued to apply operational procedures which aim to optimize daily fuel consumption (such as adjusting routes and fuel loads, flight tracking and good piloting practice, maximized maintenance operations such as engine cleaning.
> Mitigate the impact of our activity on the ground
To complete the CO2 reduction policy related to activity on the ground, Air Tahiti Nui promotes energy efficiency in buildings (air conditioning being the biggest energy consumption item in tropical environments) and encourages employees to adopt eco-friendly practices at work, in particular eco-mobility.
> Raising passenger awareness
In order to include our passengers in this comprehensive environmentally friendly approach and to comply with the new regulatory and sanitary constraints, Air Tahiti Nui has continued to gradually reduce single-use plastic on-board in favor of more sustainable alternatives (recycled plastic heat-resistant cups, wooden coffee stirrers, etc.), although with the Covid-19 pandemic, aviation standards imposed new non-recyclable practices to protect passengers and crew health.
Since 2017, ATN's comfort kit integrates accessories made of eco-friendly materials, which earned ATN the 2017 Travelplus award and the 2019 Gold Award with the introduction of Heiva brand beauty products (locally made). More recently, ATN offers a children's kit with an activity booklet raising awareness of marine biodiversity protection, produced in partnership with the committed association Te Mana o Te Moana.
In November 2019, ATN launched a call for projects for the recycling of its old uniforms aimed at project leaders and local associations with a social and environmental vocation, enabling many original initiatives to be promoted.
> Offsetting our emissions
Despite not being subject to the application of a carbon tax, Air Tahiti Nui has committed to monitoring and reporting its annual emissions, in accordance with the EMP (Emissions Monitoring Plan) approved by the DGAC during 2019 (regarding the regulatory obligation of CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation)
Moreover, Air Tahiti Nui approached the New Zealand star-up CarbonClick to offer its passengers the possibility of voluntarily offsetting their travel emissions since december 2020.

The company also continues to sponsor local associations and initiatives who are fully committed to preserve the environment and biodiversity of French Polynesia to the tune of 2.9 million XPF in 2020 such as the non-profit organization Tetiaroa Society, the association Nana Sac plastique (“Goodbye plastic bag”) or the Institut des récifs coralliens du Pacifique (Pacific oral reff institute)
