This section contains all the information you need to prepare your travel bags for your trip with Air Tahiti Nui.

Are you traveling on a flight operated by a codeshare partner airline or another airline? The baggage policy may differ from that of Air Tahiti Nui. In this case, we invite you to consult this information on the airline's website or contact your travel agent.

We recommend that you comply with the most restrictive conditions in all cases.

Cabin bag

The weight of your cabin bags depends on your class of travel.

For an infant (0-23 months) without seat reservation, you benefit from a cabin allowance of one (1) personal item of 3kg (6.6pounds).

To ensure a comfortable and safe journey, cabin bags will be examined before boarding. Any non-compliant cabin bag must be checked in and carried in the hold. Charges may then apply.

All cabin baggage must be less than or equal to 115 cm / 45 inches (sum of the 3 dimensions A + B + C).

Please find below the cabin baggage allowance applicable to adult passengers, children or infants occupying a seat on flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui:

Air Tahiti Nui accepts only one personal item per person, weighing a maximum of 3 kg. Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, unless you are seated at an emergency exit. In this case, the item must be stored in the luggage compartment.

Acoustic guitar or Ukulele

Included in your baggage allowance, a ukulele or acoustic guitar up to 115 cm (45 inches) in length is allowed as carry-on bag.
It should preferably be placed in a rigid case with rounded corners or a guitar cover, or placed in your carry-on bag.
Electric guitars are not allowed in the cabin.

Medical equipment

Mobility devices (i.e., cane, crutches, foldable manual wheelchair, etc.) are allowed in the cabin free of charge in addition to your standard baggage allowance, provided they can be stowed in an onboard compartment. Equipment that cannot be stowed in the cabin will be transported in the hold free of charge.

Respiratory assistance devices (i.e. portable oxygen concentrators, assisted breathing devices, etc.) may be carried in the cabin free of charge in addition to your standard baggage allowance.

Please visit our "Special Assistance" page or contact your Air Tahiti Nui office for more information.

Medication and medical supplies

If you need to carry medication in the cabin, we recommend that you keep your prescription as well as the packaging and instructions of the medication with you so that you can present them at check-in.
Also, if your medication needs to be refrigerated, please make arrangements in advance.
Flight attendants will not accept any human product (blood bag, etc...) and any pharmaceutical product requiring special attention or care. We recommend that you make arrangements accordingly.
Please note that for safety reasons a container of dry ice (2.5 kg/5.5 pounds per passenger) must not be sealed, a small vent must allow the release of CO2.
If you need to keep equipment in the cabin for medical reasons (e.g., syringes), you must declare it during security checks.
Air Tahiti Nui provides onboard containers for the safe disposal of your syringes and needles.
Make yourself known to the crew members as soon as you arrive on the plane.
Under no circumstances should needles and syringes be disposed of in seat pockets or any other unsecured container.

For more information, visit our special "Special Assistance".

If your itinerary includes flights operated by other airlines, the Air Tahiti Nui baggage allowance may not apply. For more information, see the section below on connecting flights and multi-carrier itineraries.

Connecting flights

If you have a connecting flight on your Air Tahiti Nui ticket, your bag may be checked through to your final destination if that flight is also operated by Air Tahiti Nui or by an airline with which we have a bag transfer agreement.

If the different flights in your itinerary have separate tickets, you must check in your bag for each flight, retrieve it and check it in again between flights. The baggage allowance for each leg of your trip is independent, so it's important to check before you leave.

If you are connecting with a flight operated by another airline whose ticket was purchased separately from your Air Tahiti Nui flight, please contact the other airline to find out if your bag can be checked through on our flight.

Always check the destination indicated on your bag tag, this is the destination to which it has been checked and in which it will be unloaded.

Multi-carrier itineraries

If you have more than one ticket for the same itinerary, the baggage policy may vary from flight to flight and apply separately. In this case, it is best to comply with the most restrictive bag allowance to avoid additional excess bag charges.

If your trip involves more than one carrier, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Resolution 302 applies for bag allowances and fees. The Most Significant Carrier (MSC) concept is applicable to decide which baggage rules apply to a given itinerary.

There are two exceptions to the concept of primary commercial carrier (MSC) :

  • If the itinerary begins or ends in the United States (U.S. DOT Regulation 399.87) or Canada (CTA Order 2014-A-158).
  • From Brazil: For international travel originating in Brazil, local regulations require that all passengers be allowed two pieces of baggage up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each for the entire journey, regardless of stopovers.

Most significant carrier

There are several steps to determine the MSC carrier based on the 3 IATA zones and their sub-zones.

The following IATA zones and sub-zones are used in the examples below to illustrate the steps to determine applicable bag allowances and charges.

  • Zone 1: North America, Central and South America, Hawaii
    • United States, Canada, Mexico;
    • Caribbean;
    • Central America;
    • South America.
  • Zone 2: Europe, Middle East
    • Europe;
    • Middle East;
    • Africa.
  • Zone 3 : Asia, Guam, Southwest Pacific
    • Japan, Korea;
    • Southeast Asia;
    • South Asian subcontinent;
    • South West Pacific.

Step 1:

First carrier moving from one IATA zone to another. The baggage allowance of this 1st carrier applies.

Example:

ITINERARYPPT-NRT CarrierNRT-Seoul Carrier
PPT-KOREAAir Tahiti NuiKorean Air
The MSC is Air Tahiti Nui. Therefore, the applicable baggage allowance is that of Air Tahiti Nui.

Step 2:

First carrier from one IATA subzone to another (applicable only in case of travel within a single IATA zone).

ITINERARYPPT-AKL CarrierAKL-Sydney Carrier
PPT-SYDNEYAir Tahiti NuiQantas
MSC is Air Tahiti Nui on the outbound leg. Qantas will fly the return leg.

Step 3:

First carrier to operate an international route (in the case of travel in a single sub-area).

ITINERARYBOB-PPT CarrierPPT-AKL Carrier
BORA BORA – AUCKLANDAir TahitiAir Tahiti Nui
The MSC is Air Tahiti Nui because it is the 1st carrier to operate an international route

EXCEPTION for travel to or from the UNITED STATES or CANADA

If your travel on a single ticket that begins or ends in the United States or Canada, the excess bag allowance and fees applicable at the start of your journey will apply throughout your journey.

For codeshare flights that are part of an itinerary where the origin or destination of the ticket is a U.S. point, U.S. and foreign carriers must apply the marketing carrier's baggage allowance and fees throughout the itinerary if they differ from those of an operating carrier.

Club Tiare members

Club Tiare members with Silver or Gold status are entitled to an additional free baggage item. This extra bag must comply with the weight conditions corresponding to their class of travel.

Please note that this additional bag allowance does not appear on your ticket and is only valid on flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui and some of our codeshare partners upon presentation of your Club Tiare Silver or Gold card.

Do you wish to carry more bags than the number included in your fare? Buy excess baggage. For more information, please visit our Excess Baggage page.
