The ‘Ori Tahiti Nui Competitions are a Tahitian dance contest

Created in 2012 by Tumata Robinson and Manouche Lehartel /’Ori Tahiti is open to dancers of all nationalities, entering individually or as part of Tahitian dance companies and schools, whether local or based outside of French Polynesia.

’Ori Tahiti Nui aims to encourage the conservation, development, promotion and recognition of Polynesian culture in all its forms—especially dance, music and the artistic crafts—in Polynesia and across the globe.

Competition descriptions

  • Solo competition (Men/Women/Children): 

    To percussion compositions of 1 minute 30 for Youths and 2 minutes for Adults.

    • YOUTH OR TAMA CATEGORIES competition on Saturday morning: Hine Tamahou & Tamahou/Tamahine & Tamaroa/Hine Taure’a & Tama Taure’a.
       
    • ADULT OR ‘ARIOI CATEGORIES competition on Sunday morning: Toa/’Aito/Hiva/Feti’a.
Ori Tahiti Nui Competitions
  • Mehura competition (slow ‘aparima) by a group of 5 people (men/women/mixed): Competition on Saturday afternoon.

    Two categories are open to formations made up of 5 artists (vahine, tane or mixed) aged 15 and over:

    • AMATEUR CATEGORY

      Formations of 5 artists (made up of a majority of artists not having previously placed on an ‘Ori Tahiti competition podium or not considered professional) performing a slow song of 3 to 4 minutes.

    • PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

      Formations of 5 artists performing a slow song of 3 to 4 minutes.

  • ’Ote’a competition by group of 5 persons (men/women/mixed): Competition on Saturday afternoon.

    Two categories are open to formations made up of 5 artists (vahine, tane or mixed) aged 15 and over:

    • AMATEUR CATEGORY

      Formations of 5 artists (made up of a majority of artists not having previously placed on an ‘Ori Tahiti competition podium or not considered professional) dancing to percussion compositions of 3 to 4 minutes.

    • PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

    Formations of 5 artists dancing to percussion compositions of 3 to 4 minutes.
