New Zealand entry conditions
New Zealand opened its borders to tourists since May 02, 2022.
We remind you that the current entry and stay conditions are subject to change without notice, at the discretion of the competent authorities.

For all travel to/from Australia, we encourage you to review the Australian entry requirements.
Please be advised that Qantas and Jetstar Airways require all travelers boarding their aircraft to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 even if the country of departure and/or destination does not require it.
The list of exemptions to this rule, including children, is available on the official Qantas website.
We recommend that you check the airline that operates your flight on your travel itineraries.
All travelers (including New Zealand and Australian citizens) must have a valid passport when entering New Zealand.
For visiting travelers (including students), the passport must be valid for a period of:
- 3 months after the date of your departure from New Zealand,
- 1 month after the date of your departure from New Zealand if the country issuing your passport has a consular representation in New Zealand that is able to renew the validity of your passport.
Travelers who are permanent residents of New Zealand and Australia, or who hold a New Zealand and Australian passport, must have a passport that is valid on the date you enter and leave New Zealand.

All travelers arriving in New Zealand require a visa (except for New Zealand and Australian passport holders).
Travelers must apply for a NZeTA visa online.
International visitor travelers (except transit passengers at Auckland International Airport), are also required to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism (IVL) tax. This tax is paid at the same time as the NZeTA visa application.

Who needs an NZeTA?
You must obtain an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand if:
- You are traveling on a passport issued by a visa waiver country such as France, USA and Japan
- You are a permanent resident of Australia
New Zealand and Australian passport holders and travelers with a valid New Zealand visa are exempt from the NZeTA visa requirement.
What about transit travelers?
Travelers who are citizens of a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country will need a NZeTA visa to transit through the Auckland International Airport transit lounge before continuing their journey.
How do I apply for a NZeETA and pay the IVL?
You can apply for NZeTA and pay IVL in two ways:
1. By downloading the official "NZeTA" mobile app.
2. By completing the form on the New Zealand Immigration website
We recommend that you anticipate your NZeTA application before your trip. It can take up to 72 hours to get your NZeTA approved.
Note: For individuals with multiple surnames on their passport, the name used on the NZeTA must match the machine-readable portion of the passport. For a married woman who has both names on the passport, it is mandatory to use the maiden name.
Validity and Cost:
An NZeTA will be valid for 2 years and will cost NZD 9.00 for applications made on the mobile app and NZD 12.00 for applications made on the website.
'International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy' (IVL):
- The IVL is paid at the same time as the NZeTA and costs NZD 35.00.
- Once paid, the IVL will last as long as the NZeTA is valid.
- Australian permanent residents will need to hold an NZeTA but will not be required to pay the IVL.

Be sure to check with your travel agent and/or the appropriate authorities before traveling abroad.
Each passenger is solely responsible for presenting the necessary travel documents for travel to the countries he or she wishes to visit and for complying with the laws and regulations of the countries visited, whether for travel to, from or through (connecting flights).
It is required to enter New Zealand:
- A full vaccination for those 17 and older,
- A negative test result for Covid-19 for people 2 years and older.

Vaccinated travelers can enter New Zealand without isolation or quarantine upon arrival. This includes unvaccinated minors up to the age of 16.
To be accepted on board, the following documents must be presented at the check-in counter upon flight departure:
- Valid travel documents (passport, NZeTA visa, IVL...) ;
- Airline ticket (round trip).
- The online travel declaration form (New Zealand Traveler Declaration).
- Proof of vaccination.
- Proof of negative Covid-19 test result.

We remind you that the supporting documents must be able to provide your name (surname identical to the one on your passport and airline ticket), first names, date of birth and a general information on the validity of the document. It is acceptable in paper or digital format with QR code recommended, and preferably in English.
UPON ARRIVAL IN NEW ZEALAND
1- Customs will check the conformity of your documents with the entry conditions.
2- You will receive from the Biosecurity department, a sanitary pack containing 2 screening test kits (antigenic test) to be performed on the 1st day and the 5th day of your arrival. For more information on the sanitary protocol on arrival, click HERE.
Proof of a complete vaccination scheme is required for entry into New Zealand, except for New Zealand nationals, residence class visa (either a Permanent Resident Visa or a Resident Visa), Australian citizens ordinarily resident in New Zealand, persons under 17 years of age and persons who cannot be immunized for medical reasons.
This vaccination scheme is considered complete provided:
- That the vaccine used is on the list of vaccines authorized by the New Zealand government.
- 1 dose of a single dose vaccine such as Janssen OR 2 doses of a double dose vaccine such as Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca; Novavax, Covaxin, Sinopharm and Sinovac, etc.
The combination of vaccines is allowed if it is approved in the country where you received them and if they are on the list of vaccines authorized by the New Zealand government.
THE VACCINATION CERTIFICATE
The vaccination certificate, approved by a government health authority, must include
- your name
- the name of the vaccine(s) you received
- the name of the organization that administered them
- the name of the place where you received it
- the date of each dose or the date a primary immunization was completed
It is accepted in digital, electronic, or paper format.

Note: A 14-day delay after receiving the single dose of a single-dose vaccine or the last dose of a 2-dose COVID-19 vaccine series is not required before your departure to New Zealand.
Each traveler 2 years of age and older must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test result from one of the following tests to be performed prior to departure on your 1st international flight to New Zealand:
- An RT-PCR test performed within 48 hours of departure, OR
- An antigen test supervised by a health care professional and performed less than 24 hours prior to departure, OR
- An RT-LAMP saliva test supervised by a healthcare professional and performed less than 24 hours prior to departure.
Self-tests not supervised by a health care professional are not accepted.
Following an infection with Covid-19, your screening test may still show a positive result. In this case, you will need a medical certificate of recovery indicating the date of your positive Covid-19 test result and attesting to your infectiousness in order to be allowed to travel.
If for medical reasons you are unable to perform these tests, please have a medical certificate dated less than 48 hours prior to the flight stating that you are unable to perform these tests and confirming the absence of Covid-19 symptoms.
PRE-DEPARTURE TEST DOCUMENT
The Covid-19 negative test document must contain the following information and be written in English:
- Traveler's first and last name
- Traveler's date of birth or passport number
- Type of test performed (PCR, RAT or LAMP)
- Date and time the test was performed
- Test result
- Name of the laboratory if it is an RT-PCR test
- Name of the health care professional (including a letterhead or stamp confirming name, profession and employer) or the name of the pharmacy or health care entity, who supervised the performance of the test.
The document is accepted in paper or digital format.
IN THE EVENT OF A CANCELLED OR DELAYED FLIGHT
If your flight is cancelled, a new Covid-19 test with a negative result must be performed no later than 48 hours (PCR) or 24 hours (RAT or LAMP) before your new flight to Auckland.
If your flight is delayed 24 hours or less AND your pre-departure test result is negative, you may still travel, even if your test result is more than 48 hours before the original flight's scheduled departure time. In this case, you will need to keep a receipt from the original flight to present to staff when you check in for the new flight.
